I drilled 3 holes to mount the channel to the wood I countersunk them so the led strip will sit level no pics sorry.
Once again a big thank you to Michael Ross for his guide on this and the code he did all the hard work. From a software perspective, it is an E1. The firmware is open source and developed in the ESP Arduino environment. Pixel and power wiring is straight forward and simple. Further configuration can be done via the web interface once the ESPixelStick is connected to your network. Vixen 3 and xLights are two free and open source applications I recommend looking at to get you started in sequencing.

ESPixelStick v1. Do you have any other devices on your network? It sounds like your multicast traffic is being queued on the DTIM interval which is common when devices with power management are connected like phones, laptops, tablets, etc…. With 3rd party firmware, you can force Multicast rates, but a dedicated network is recommended if you require Multicast. Can you use Unicast? The network router is only connected to the Nodemcu 1. I am currently looking at of those pixels humming away through a color-wash-gradient sequence I am using for testing. Working great. A good reason to use a level shifter would be to protect the output of your Huzzah. Also, I looked at the link you posted to your pixels and they look suspiciously like the ones I am using from Amazon, namely they are 5Vnot 12V. A problem you will need to address is the voltage drop along the 5V wire from the driving end of the string to the other.
I just checked and after pixels my 5V had dropped to 3. I will try injecting fresh 5V via a heavier gauge wire every 50 pixels or so, depending on my final configuration. The voltage loss is pure IR drop. Oh good catch - the ones i linked to are 5v, i have the 12v kind in hand though. Is the resistor needed from the GPIO pin? I just tested the voltage from GPIO and ground, and it's less than 1v. So it's not sending the data correctly from the ESP i guess?
On a whim I tried the same connections on a 2nd string I hadn't installed in a mini tree yet I even reconnected the first one up and triple checked conncetions. So either the first one is bad or I shorted it out. Thanks for the tips guys. If the Huzzah is spitting data out of that pin then the voltage will be going up and down and unless you are using an oscilloscope, you can't really tell what the "logic high" voltage. The resistor is recommended by the ESPixel Stick designer and the Adafruit geniuses to protect the output of the processor from being destroyed if it is shorted to ground.
Adafruit also recommends a uf cap maybe larger, I forget to serve as a current reservoir. I have used it on my Arduino-clone NeoPixel projects but don't have one on my breadboard because the first pixel is 1' from the 10A power supply.
